Plum Island Animal Disease Center/Department of Homeland Security: Field Support Services, Inc. (FSSI) provides facility operations and maintenance support services to the Department of Homeland Security and the US Department of Agriculture. The installation consists of 49 buildings on 840 acres that is equitable to significantly larger operation because of the complexity and sensitive nature of the mission and its location on an Island where everything; vehicles, equipment, supplies and personnel must be transported by the Ferry Vessels under the operation of FSSI personnel.
The technical services support includes operating a Heat Plant, Power Plant, and Water/ Wastewater Plant that provide the primary resources for sustaining the installation.
In addition to the plant operations, FSSI provides maintenance and repair of the ventilationand bio-containment systems, air conditioning andrefrigeration systems and the bio-containment incinerator system. FSSI also manages the facility operations and maintenance requirements through the use of carpentry, masonry, plumbing and pipefitting, painting, sheet metal, welding, high and low voltage electrical, electronics, and grounds maintenance technicians. We are responsible for the food service operation, janitorial services, vehicle maintenance, audio visual services, computer maintenance, emergency medical technicians and fire department operations, fuel deliveries, installation security (armed guards), and three Ferry Vessels that bring and take everything from the island.
